Former Chief Executive of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, Dr. Emmanuel Kofi Mbiah has revealed that the government must engage the right policies to properly yield the potentials of Ghana’s blue economy.

The marine expert, delivering a keynote presentation at the 2024 edition of the Shipping Conference Series centering on a principle he labeled as the Blue Cluster approach, indicated that there are many strategies that have been introduced by the government to boost efficiency of the blue economy.

However, Dr. Mbiah explained that these strategies can only be positioned as a system if policy makers in Ghana intentionally focus on creating more policies that can support and crystalize the expected results outlined within these strategies. “If a strategy is going to work, there needs to be a couple of policies that will support it. Ghana has a lot of strategies for the blue economy but policy makers must develop policies to give Ghana a viable position on a global scale and this cuts across all sectors.”

He called for a need for government officials and policy makers to consciously involve themselves in building designated systems which involve sensitization and local inclusivity to enhance Ghana’s Maritime industry. “Politicians need to sit and consciously ask how can we put this together, how do we build this environment to use the ocean and marine resources to build the blue economy.”
