Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has warned the potential buyer of the Komenda Sugar Factory against engaging in any opaque or underhanded transactions with the current government, emphasizing the need for transparency in the deal.

Mahama’s caution follows the announcement by Trade and Industry Minister K.T. Hammond that the government plans to lease the Komenda Sugar Factory to West African Agro Limited, an Indian company, for a renewable period of 15 to 20 years, sparking concern about transparency and terms of the deal.

Addressing the people of Volta Region as part of his tour, former President Mahama voiced concern over the opaque nature of the transaction, emphasizing that the Komenda Sugar Factory is a national asset that deserves a transparent leasing process. He stressed that the secrecy surrounding the deal raises questions about its legitimacy and potential benefits to the nation.

Mahama reiterated that any agreement reached without transparency would not be recognized or honored if the NDC assumes power, emphasizing the need for openness and accountability. He also advocated for a fair and competitive process to select the most suitable investor to collaborate with the government in operating the factory, ensuring the best outcome for the nation.
