The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is set to install 2,000 street lights in various communities by August 25 as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance security and visibility in the city.

Gilbert Ankrah, the Public Relations Officer for the AMA, shared this update in an interview with Happy Kaseɛbɔ.

He noted that the assembly has already received a portion of the street lights and installation is scheduled to commence in key areas over the coming days.

“These street lights will be installed within the AMA’s zone, focusing on areas like Ga-Mashie, James Town, parts of Agbogbloshie, and communities within Ablekuma South such as Korle Bu, Chorkor, and Banana Inn. Additionally, places in Okaikwei South like Bubuiashie, Avenor, Kaneshie, and the Industrial Area will also benefit,” he explained.

Gilbert Ankrah emphasized that these are not the typical street lights installed on major roads, but rather community-specific lights designed to improve safety and visibility in residential neighborhoods.

Regarding maintenance, he highlighted that the Mayor, during a recent town hall meeting, stressed the need for consistent upkeep hence, assembly members, alongside technicians, will routinely check the lights to promptly address any faults.

He also mentioned that some street lights had already been distributed to assembly members and installed prior to this new batch, with pictures to show for them.

“The purpose for the installation of the street lights is basically to ensure that the city is free of criminal activities especially during the night. As we all know, darker areas encourage crime so trying to get these places lighted up will prevent some of these things and ensure that there is some sort of visibility for people to go about their daily activities” he disclosed.
