The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to select Andrew Asiamah Amoako, the current second deputy speaker of Parliament and independent MP for Fomena, as its candidate for the upcoming 2024 general elections.

This move marks a significant shift in the relationship between the NPP and Asiamah, who was previously ousted from the party under disputed circumstances. The decision signals a potential reconciliation and a new chapter in their political alliance.

The development was further corroborated by William Kusi, secretary of the Ashanti Regional NPP reconciliation committee and a lawyer, who shed light on the reasoning behind this decision. According to Kusi, the move to select Andrew Asiamah Amoako as the NPP’s candidate is a strategic one, driven by the party’s best interests.

He cited the extraordinary circumstances of Asiamah’s departure from the party and his later instrumental role in bolstering the NPP’s majority in Parliament as key factors in this decision. By welcoming Asiamah back into the fold, the party aims to capitalize on his influence and strengths in the upcoming elections.

Andrew Asiamah’s departure from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prior to the 2020 elections was shrouded in controversy. Following internal disputes with party leaders, Asiamah opted to contest the Fomena seat as an independent candidate, leading to his expulsion from the party. Nevertheless, he emerged victorious, securing a crucial win that denied the NPP an outright parliamentary majority.

In a surprising turn of events, Asiamah chose to align with the NPP’s Majority Caucus after his re-election as an independent candidate, providing the party with a slim majority and enabling them to maintain control of the legislative agenda. This decision showcased Asiamah’s enduring commitment to the NPP’s overarching objectives, despite his expulsion and independent status. His actions demonstrated a willingness to put aside past differences and work towards a common goal.
