The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has commended the Ghanaian media for its vital role in the nation’s development and in supporting his political campaigns.

He made this statement during a media engagement on Sunday, 25 August, in Accra, Dr. Bawumia underscored the media’s significance as a key partner in the country’s advancement.

He also assured that an NPP-led government would continue fostering strong collaboration with the press.

He emphasized the NPP’s strong track record in promoting media freedom, recalling that it was under former President Kufuor’s leadership that the criminal libel law was abolished, paving the way for greater press freedom.

“The NPP views the media as a crucial partner in national development. In our quest to expand the frontiers of democratic governance in Ghana, it was the NPP under former President J.A Kufuor that repealed the criminal libel law for the media to function fully.”

He went on to assure that, if elected in the 2024 general elections, his administration would continue to uphold and deepen media freedom.

“We’re partners with you, and the partnership I will continue to keep as the new leader of the NPP. We’re committed to deepening media freedom,” he added.
