The long anticipated Jamestown Fishing Harbour will be officially commissioned by President Akufo-Addo, today, September 13, 2024, alongside the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Elizabeth Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey.

The state of the art, multimillion-dollar project, built by the CRCC Harbour and Channel Engineering Bureau Group Co. Ltd. as part of the China Aid to Ghana Fishing Port Complex Project, is set to revolutionize the fishing industry in Accra, boosting the livelihoods of the local fishing community and improving Ghana’s fishing operations.

The Jamestown Fishing Harbour, featuring a fish market with 112 stalls, a 60 ton per day ice- making plant, and a cold storage capacity of 600 tons, is being celebrated as a landmark project that aligns with the government’s commitment to sustainable resource management and food security.

The facility also includes a ship repair workshop, administration offices, and fire safety systems, ensuring efficient operations and long-term sustainability.

Speaking in an interview ahead of the commissioning, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Elizabeth Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey, said the project was not only about improving the fishing industry but also revamping economic activities in the entire Ga Mashie enclave.

“The harbour is expected to create numerous employment opportunities while ensuring that fish handling and preservation meet international standards. This will greatly improve the livelihoods of our people,” she said.

The Mayor urged the community to take responsibility for maintaining the Jamestown Fishing Harbour, emphasising its transformative potential.

Mayor Sackey announced that a sanitation court has been set up to address violations, cautioning that individuals caught defecating around the harbour will face fines and hard labour as a deterrent.

Among the dignitaries expected at the commissioning are the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, the Ga Mantse, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II and his entourage, as well as the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa.
