Amnesty International Ghana, a Human Rights Organization in Ghana, has appealed for a compensation for all protesters who were unlawfully arrested during the Democracy hub demonstration from Saturday September 21st to Monday September 23rd, 2024 in Accra, while detained protesters be granted basic access to proper food, access to legal counsel and medical treatment.

Country Director of Amnesty International Ghana, Genevieve Partington, says, the organization needs to change the narrative from the word ‘’protest’’ while reviewing the Public Order Act1994 491.

According to her, it has become important to call for a review of laws regarding protests in the country to ensure that the rights of citizens are not infringed, adding that, “it’s time the government took these issues seriously and ensured law and order as we approach the elections in December’’.

She demanded for an independent investigation into the manhandling of arrested protester “that an independent investigation on this matter be immediately conducted and actions taken to ensure that such injustice and inhumane treatment to citizens of the Republic of Ghana does not happen again’’,.

“We are requesting a list of all detained protesters and where they are stationed so we can be granted access to them, so they receive the necessary care and basic human rights. We are also appealing that all who were unlawfully arrested be compensated according to the law of Ghana.’’ She stated.
