Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the National Labour Commission (NLC) is scheduled to meet with Organised Labour on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, to discuss its planned strike.

The strike, which is set to begin on October 10, is a response to government’s failure to address the issue of illegal small scale mining, also known as galamsey.

The Executive Secretary of NLC, Ofosu Asamoah, who announced the meeting said it aims to address concerns raised in a notice from the union.

In an interview on an Accra based radio station he said, “We just got a note of it and the commission will be sitting on [Wednesday] and we will look at the way forward. Fortunately, the strike is intended to begin on the 10th so we have time to look at it”.

Last month, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) outlined three major demands to the government, including the immediate removal of all mining equipment from forest reserves and areas near water bodies.

They also urged the deployment of the Police and Military with full authority to remove or destroy mining and earth-moving equipment located near river bodies and within forest reserves.
