3-day protest to demand release of Democracy Hub anti-galamsey protesters begins today

Activists are calling for the immediate release of 53 anti-galamsey protesters arrested during the Democracy Hub demonstration.

In response, they have launched a three-day protest starting today, Thursday, 3 October 2024.

The protest is organized by the “FreeTheCitizens” and “SayNoToGalamsey” movements, aiming to draw attention to the severe environmental damage caused by illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Running through to Saturday, 5 October 2024, the demonstration will follow a designated route, beginning at Legon Okponglo and ending at Black Star Square.

Protesters will march through key points, including Legon Stadium, Okponglo Traffic Light, Shiashie, Shangri-La, and the Airport Traffic Light.

Planned stops include the National Service Secretariat, the Electoral Commission Office, Parliament, and Independence Square.

With significant support on social media, thousands are expected to join, increasing pressure on the government to address illegal mining that is devastating Ghana’s forests and water bodies.

The protest also aims to highlight the wrongful arrests of activists.

The Ghana Police Service has warned they will disperse crowds if there is a risk of a breach of peace.
