James Kwesi Appiah has stepped aside from his role at the GFA Exco till end of November after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) officially instructed him to resign from one of his positions before the upcoming Ghana versus Sudan Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

Appiah, a former Ghana international, is currently the head coach of Sudan’s national football team while also serving as an Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

His dual roles have sparked criticism among sections of football fans, with some urging him to relinquish one of his positions to avoid a potential conflict of interest.

Ahead of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers doubleheader, CAF formally directed Appiah to step down from either his GFA position or his role as Sudan’s coach before the matches. The governing body emphasized that this action is necessary to ensure the integrity of the competition.

CAF’s statement highlighted the urgency of the matter, particularly with the first leg of the qualifiers scheduled for Thursday, October 10, at the Accra Sports Stadium. The return leg will take place on October 14 at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Libya.
