Convener for Boardroom Governance Summit, Professor Douglas Boateng has stressed that Ghana can overcome illegal mining known as galamsey, and restore its water bodies to their former clarity.

Speaking at Maiden Edition of Boardroom Governance Summit organised by the Ministry of Finance, State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) and the Institute of Directors Ghana (IoD) under the theme “Boardroom Governance, Accountability, and Long-term sustainability Development: The Inextricable Links”, on Tuesday October 8, 2024 at Labadi Beach Hotel, Accra, he emphasized the crucial role of effective Boardroom governance in combating this issue. Mr. Boateng noted that fighting “galamsey” requires a collaborative effort, not just government action, and that unity is key to success.

He also highlighted that Ghana doesn’t need international intervention to address this problem, but rather a unified approach with effective governance. This sentiment is echoed by the Government of Ghana, which has expressed commitment to combating illegal mining.

He cited that by adopting effective Boardroom governance, promoting collaboration, providing alternative livelihoods, and strengthening law enforcement, Ghana can overcome the challenges posed by galamsey and protect its natural resources for future generations.
