The Director for Governance, Justice and Peace for Ghana Catholic Bishops conference, Rev. Father Michael Quaicoe has indicated that the Environmental Prayer Protest walk by Archdiocese of Accra was to seek divine intervention of God’s wisdom to our leaders to combat illegal mining menace.

According to him, the Catholic Archdiocese acknowledges the steps taken so far by the President in combating illegal mining but still demands more steps from the President to eradicate the menace.

In an interview with Happy Kasiɛbɔ after bringing the walk to an end, the Director noted that they are of the hope that God should answer their prayers and direct the President to take the right steps and decisions to bring an end to the illegal mining activities.

In addition, Michael Quaicoe emphasized that the Catholic church has expressed their displeasure over illegal mining activities so many times including stakeholder engagements disputing the fact that the Catholic Church has been quiet about illegal mining.

“The Catholic Church has issued not less than nine press statements on illegal mining activities to raise concern about the escalating galamsey menace. The Catholic Church even released a statement on September 11, 2024 about how galamsey is destroying our environment”.

The perception in the minds of some Ghanaians who believe this is the first time we are expressing our concerns over galamsey should be disregarded.
