Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, founder of Worldwide Miracle Outreach, has apologized to the University of Ghana (UG) following statements made on GTV’s Breakfast Show on October 24, 2024.

In his comments, Rev. Dr. Tetteh claimed that a considerable number of UG students were HIV-positive, attributing this trend to what he alleged as promiscuous behavior on campus. His remarks sparked concern, especially after he highlighted the surprising number of HIV-positive students at the university.

The University of Ghana responded by underscoring the need for evidence-based discussions on HIV/AIDS, warning that misinformation could result in unnecessary fear and stigma. UG emphasized that only scientific testing, rather than speculation or anecdotal evidence, can accurately diagnose HIV. They noted that HIV status cannot be confirmed through counseling or prayer, stressing that scientific methods are the only valid means of diagnosing infections. The university cautioned against making public statements that lack data-backed evidence.

Rev. Dr. Tetteh on the same program on Thursday, October 31, expressed regret for his remarks, clarifying that he did not intend to discredit the university or promote fear, stigma, or misinformation. He explained that his intent was to address broader societal issues affecting young people, not to single out UG students.

He further clarified that his comments were based on his experiences counseling young people who confide in him about their personal challenges. Reaffirming his commitment to confidentiality, he expressed sincere apologies to UG and the public for any distress his comments may have caused.
