The United States Embassy in Ghana has announced that Ghana is ranked 18th on the list of top 25 countries with the highest number of students in the United States.

This ranking, detailed in the 2024 Open Doors report released on Monday, November 18, 2024, highlights a 45% increase in the number of Ghanaians pursuing academic opportunities in the United States compared to the previous year. According to the report, 9,394 Ghanaians studied in the United States during the 2023-2024 academic year, marking a record high.

The report also reveals that Ghana has become the 9th largest sender of graduate students globally, with 6,337 Ghanaians enrolled in graduate programs. Additionally, Ghanaian students collectively earned nearly $9.2 million in scholarships, accessing higher education at over 680 institutions across all 50 U.S. states.

The Institute of International Education (IIE), which publishes the Open Doors report annually, noted that the United States remains the most popular destination for international students. During the 2023-2024 academic year, the U.S. hosted 1,126,690 international students, reflecting a 7% increase from the previous year.

The Open Doors report is an annual comprehensive analysis of international student enrollment trends in the United States.
