Adjiringanor North Motorway Extension Unauthorized Land Development: Residents Association petitions Adentan Municipal Assembly to halt work

The Adjiringanor North Motorway Extension–Methodist Church Residents Association (ANMCARA) has called for an immediate halt to what it describes as unlawful and unauthorized construction activities on a parcel of land in Adjiringanor-East Legon, Accra, being designated as a road for residents.

At a press briefing held today, the association highlighted a statement released on Thursday, November 21, which explained that the area layout, originally created by the Tema Municipal Assembly, was adopted after the establishment of the Adentan Municipal Assembly. The layout designated the land as part of a planned road network for the Adjiringanor community. The statement added, “Prior to the passage of LI 1880 in 2008, the Adjiringanor community was under the jurisdiction of the Tema Municipal Assembly. Upon the creation of the Adentan Municipal Assembly, the layout plan approved by the Tema Municipal Assembly was adopted for the Adjiringanor community.”

Chairman of ANMCARA, Joseph Amoa-Awuah expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing development during the press engagement. He revealed that previous appeals to the Adentan Municipal Assembly as of October 21, 2024 to stop work on the land had been ignored. According to him, the assembly approved the land development as part of a re-zoning exercise in sections of the community.

Despite the existence of water pipelines and electricity installations beneath the land, Mr. Amoa-Awuah stated that the assembly appeared unfazed to the risks posed by the construction. He emphasized, “We have complained to the Municipal Chief Executive, but no action has been taken. Access to critical installations by the Electricity Company of Ghana and the Ghana Water Company is now compromised. In the event of an emergency, repairs will be difficult, creating significant risks.”

Mr. Amoa-Awuah described the situation as a clear misuse of discretion by the Adentan Municipal Assembly and a failure to prioritize the safety and convenience of residents.

ANMCARA’s media consultant, Daniel Acheampong also warned that continued neglect by the assembly would force the association to take legal action. He stated, “We have already written to the Adentan Municipal Assembly about this unauthorized development. Members of the association know this land has served as a road for the past 20 years, yet the assembly has permitted unlawful work to continue.”

The association has once again appealed to the Adentan Municipal Assembly to consider how the development restricts access for the Electricity Company of Ghana and the Ghana Water Company Limited, disrupts emergency response by the Ghana Fire Service, and limits residents’ access to their homes and called for an immediate stop. They reaffirmed their readiness to pursue legal action if their grievances remain unaddressed.
