The Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Bossman Asare, has assured political parties of the Commission’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

Speaking at a meeting with political parties on Friday, November 29, he outlined measures being undertaken to address concerns regarding shortfalls in ballot distribution and ensure a smooth election process.

He stated that the shortfalls were observed in the Greater Accra, Western North, and Bono East Regions and were reported to the head office by the respective regional directors. He also noted that the Bono and Volta Regions were not exempted from these issues.

He emphasized that the EC has adopted a standard practice of conducting thorough checks on ballot materials before they are dispatched to regional directors. This measure, he explained, ensures that any discrepancies are identified and resolved before the materials reach their intended destinations. He acknowledged that instances of shortfalls had been reported, but the EC had promptly addressed these issues by providing the necessary materials to the affected regions.

Highlighting the EC’s accountability measures, he explained that provisions are made to accommodate unforeseen challenges. These measures include providing additional ballot papers to address shortfalls and ensuring that all political parties are informed in writing about any changes.

During the meeting, political parties raised concern about delays in ballot transfers and logistical challenges in some regions. Dr. Asare assured them that the EC had taken steps to address these issues, including early dispatch of materials and enhanced monitoring mechanisms.

Dr. Asare further indicated that the EC is committed to resolving all matters related to elections promptly. He disclosed that the Commission had sent an official letter to all political parties on November 28, outlining the steps taken to address challenges with ballot distribution.

He urged stakeholders to refrain from spreading misinformation, noting that such actions undermine public confidence in the electoral process. He called for collective responsibility in safeguarding the integrity of Ghana’s democracy.
