UN envoy applauds Ghana's democratic maturity and Dr. Bawumia's statesmanship in 2024 elections

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Leonardo Santos Simão has praised the people of Ghana for their commitment to democracy and responsibility during the 2024 elections.

He described the elections as a delicate and complex undertaking, highlighting the critical roles played by various institutions and stakeholders in ensuring a transparent and credible outcome.

He stressed the importance of the final results aligning with the will of the people and commended the steps taken to ensure that the results are a true reflection of voters’ choices.

He commended the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for showing statesmanship by his act of conceding defeat.
Regarding the broader implications for Africa, Simão pointed out that Ghana’s example serves as a model for democratic governance on the continent. He emphasized the significance of leaders respecting the outcomes of elections, noting that such actions strengthen transparency, leadership credibility, and public trust in democratic institutions.

He also stressed the importance of post-election opportunities, urging the nation to focus on reconciliation, unity, and nation-building. He expressed optimism that Ghana would continue to set a standard for democratic practice in Africa, demonstrating that peaceful and credible elections can be achieved and

He stressed the importance of the international community’s respect for the choice made by the Ghanaian people and called for all actors to maintain peace and stability as the nation awaits the final declaration of results.
