The Media Coalition of Ghana has shared on distinct progress made by the media in the coverage of the 2024 elections.

At a press conference today, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), and leader of the coalition, Albert Dwumfour praised the overall smoothness of the electoral process. However, he acknowledged some lapses, including incidents that led to the loss of lives. “The Media Coalition of Ghana is excited to report that the election processes have been generally peaceful despite some regrettable and avoidable challenges, including the loss of lives that occurred in some parts of the country,” he stated.

Dwumfour commended the media for delivering what he described as the best election coverage in Ghana’s history. He also highlighted the efforts of GJA volunteers stationed across all 276 constituencies, who provided credible information. According to him, this placed the GJA and other coalition stakeholders in a strong position to ensure accurate, timely, and balanced reporting throughout the election period.

Addressing journalists safety and the incidents of vandalism that marred the elections, Mr. Dwumfour noted that the Coalition was in ongoing consultations with the Ghana Police Service, which he commended for its role in minimizing attacks on media personnel.

The Media Coalition of Ghana was described as a progressive and enduring body by Dwumfour, outlining several key impacts the Coalition made during the elections. These included the free issuance of accreditation by the Electoral Commission of Ghana to both local and foreign media and the provision of security personnel to protect journalists from potential attacks.

The Media Coalition of Ghana is made up of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), and the New Media Association of Ghana (NMAG), all of which were represented at the press conference.
