Cholera Outbreak: Measures are in place to manage the spread- Dr. Gifty Amugi

The Western Regional Deputy Director of Public Health, Dr. Gifty Amugi says the region has put in place measures to curb the spread of Cholera in the region.

According to her, since the outbreak of cholera in the region the directorate has formed a response team to work together to minimise the spread.

‘’Since the outbreak of cholera in the region, the Health Directorate has put in place measures to curb the spread, including forming a response team. The response team had all sectors relating to health and environment yet the diseases still persists’’.

Speaking to Happyghana.com. Dr. Amugi mentioned that, the affected areas include Shama, Effia, Kwesimintim, Sekondi- Takoradi, and parts of Ahanta West.

She added that, as parts of the region’s efforts to reduce the spread, it would begin to administer the cholera vaccine from December 15, 2024 to December 19, 2024 to these areas.

“This initiative will target districts severely affected by the outbreak, including the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality, Shama District, and Ahanta West District” .

Dr. Gifty Amugi reiterated that the education on the ways to curb the spread of cholera would be added to the vaccination drive.

“Vaccination, combined with improved hygiene practices, is key to controlling the spread of cholera.”
