A fire outbreak in the early hours of Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools in Accra has destroyed several ballot boxes belonging to the Ablekuma North Constituency.

The fire reportedly started in the Kwashieman Anglican ‘A’ Primary and ‘1’ JHS library, which had been temporarily used to store ballot boxes from the December 7 general elections.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Happy 98.9 FM, the Director of Education for Ablekuma North, Ebenezer Perry Ofori, revealed that he received a call around 4 a.m. from residents near the school, alerting him on the fire. He promptly contacted the Ghana National Fire Service, who responded swiftly to contain the blaze.

According to Mr. Ofori, the fire destroyed the library, which housed books, examination papers, computers, laptops, and the ballot papers. He explained that after the Ablekuma North election results were collated at Mesidonia Methodist Church, tensions and chaos led the Electoral Commission to store the ballot boxes at the school under the watch of security personnel. However, the cause of the fire remains unknown.

Mr. Ofori expressed deep concern over the incident, noting that the school has been temporarily closed as investigations are conducted by the Ghana Police Service and the Electoral Commission to determine the cause of the fire.
