The Member of Parliament for Okaikwei North, Theresa Larbi Awuni, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over the decision to erect his statue at the Effia Nkwanta Hospital Roundabout in the Western Region.

The statue of President Akufo-Addo was vandalized on the morning of Monday, December 16, 2024, with viral images showing the defaced statue, including partial damage to its left leg.

Commenting on the incident, Madam Awuni expressed her belief that the statue was not completely removed. She questioned the rationale behind mounting the statue, arguing that the substantial funds used for the project could have been better spent on creating businesses and opportunities for the youth in the community. Instead, she said, the money was wasted on a statue that serves no practical purpose.

She further noted that statues like that of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah have stood for decades without being defaced, suggesting that the vandalism of President Akufo-Addo’s statue reflects the frustration and anger of the community’s youth over poor governance.

Madam Awuni called on the NPP government to justify the relevance of the statue and stated her wish for it to have been completely dismantled.
