Ghana’s Black Maidens emerged as champions of the maiden WAFU B U-17 Girls Cup after a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Nigeria on Sunday, December 22, at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence.

The match ended 2-2 in regulation time, with Ghana eventually triumphing 5-4 on penalties to secure the coveted trophy on home soil.

Coach Nana Joe Adarkwa’s side took control early, with Gertrude Amoafo opening the scoring in the 14th minute. Just five minutes later, Priscilla Mensah doubled the lead, giving Ghana a strong 2-0 advantage.

Nigeria responded late in the first half, reducing the deficit to 2-1 with a well-taken goal in the 40th minute. Despite the momentum shift, the Black Maidens held their lead going into the halftime break.

The second half saw a determined Nigerian side pressing for an equaliser, and their efforts paid off in the 78th minute when they drew level at 2-2.

With neither side able to break the deadlock in regular time, the game was decided by penalties. Ghana demonstrated composure, converting all five of their spot-kicks, while Nigeria faltered with one miss.

The victory not only crowned the Black Maidens as champions but also highlighted Ghana’s successful hosting of the tournament.
