Chairperson of the Inter-Agency Coordinating Committee for Health Profession (ICC-HP), Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, has urged Ghanaians to prioritize good hygiene and eat under hygienic conditions during the festive season.

Prof. Kaufmann issued this caution in her Christmas message, shared on her X page, describing the festive season as a time to enjoy the warm company of family and friends.

The former NSMQ quiz mistress, however, sounded an alert on the rising spread of cholera in Ghana. She stated, “As we celebrate the holidays, let’s know that cholera is on the rise and spreading fast. Remember to wash your hands frequently with soap under running water before cooking, eating, after visiting the toilet, and when you return home from going out.”

She further emphasized the importance of maintaining clean surroundings to combat cholera. “Also ensure that the water you drink is safe, eat your food well-cooked and hot, avoid raw foods, and always keep your surroundings clean.”

Meanwhile, statistics from the Ghana Health Service, as reported by happyghana.com, reveal that Ghana has recorded 4,155 suspected cholera cases since October 2024, with 35 fatalities as of December 23, 2024.
