FDA cautions food service providers against impersonation scam

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a public alert about a scam where fraudsters are impersonating FDA officials to deceive food service businesses.

These imposters falsely claim to be investigating food poisoning cases and use this as an excuse to demand access to the WhatsApp accounts of targeted businesses.

The FDA revealed that the scammers aim to access sensitive business information, including client databases, or to compromise the systems of the establishments. In some instances, they also extort money under false pretenses.

Clarifying its official procedures, the FDA emphasized that food poisoning investigations are serious public health matters conducted through physical inspections, not phone calls.

Food vendors, restaurants, and eateries are advised to be cautious when approached with such suspicious claims. Any questionable interactions should be promptly reported to the police or the nearest FDA regional office.

The FDA also reminded the public that its field officers are not authorized to collect payments from businesses. To verify the legitimacy of any claims, establishments can contact the FDA directly at 0551112224/5 or via email at fda@fda.gov.gh.
