More than fourty (40) fisherfolk in Kamgbunli in the Ellembelle district of the western have lost their livelihoods due to fish disease in the area.

Residents of Kambungli a muslim community live on fishing as their occupation.

The community for about a month has been gripped with fear over the outbreak of a fish disease which is still under investigation.

According to the Member of Parliament for the area, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, the situation is deeply troubling and alarming as the disease has wracked the livelihoods of the people.

He mentioned that, fish caught in the Ebi River have exhibited severe skin infections, making them unsuitable for sale or consumption.

Speaking with the Assembly member for the area, Dawuda Musah said the situation has brought the community to a standstill as the fisheries commission and the Environmental Protection Agency have taken samples for further investigation.

He mentioned to HappyNews’ Paulina Arthur that, the cause of the disease is yet to be known to them, as they still await on the commission for a report and further action to be taken.

“We called on the EPA, Ghana Fisheries Commission to come to our aid. They have taken samples for investigations”.

Mr. Musa stated that, the commission together with the MP for the area have embarked on a sensitization drive to educate fisherfolk on the importance of avoiding fishing within this period until investigations are fully conducted.
