The United States has called off tariff sanctions on Colombia after the country agreed to accept deportees.
The dispute began when Colombia refused to accept migrants set to be deported by US military aircraft.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order, “Protecting the American People Against Invasion,” which led to immigration raids in cities like Chicago and Los Angeles.
Initially, Colombia resisted the deportation, but President Trump’s tariff threats led to a quick resolution. Colombia has now agreed to the deportation deal.
“Today’s events make clear to the world that America is respected again. President Trump… expects all other nations of the world to fully cooperate in accepting the deportation of their citizens illegally present in the United States.” a White House Statement said.
Colombian officials have released a statement consenting to the deportation exercise and plan to visit Washington to follow up on agreements.
The US has put a hold on additional sanctions, including a travel ban, visa revocations, and emergency treasury, banking, and financial sanctions.
