The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has suspended its three-week-long industrial action following a decision by the National Council during a virtual meeting held on Friday, January 24, 2025.

The suspension comes after the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission demonstrated goodwill by migrating staff in the Colleges of Education onto the University Salary Structure, partially fulfilling the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) Arbitration Awards.

CETAG in a statement mentioned that, the recent appointment of a new Minister of Education, who has shown keen interest in swiftly resolving the outstanding issues, further prompted them to suspend the strike.

The association also expressed concern about the adverse impact the strike was having on college students and the entire college community.

The statement by CETAG highlighted several unresolved issues that still require immediate attention from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) to ensure lasting industrial peace.

These issues include:

– Payment of All Year Round Work Compensation (AYRWC) for additional work done in 2022 to the remaining 42 colleges.
– Payment of arrears for the 2023/2024 Book and Research Allowance.

– Payment of 2022/2023 BRA Top-Up arrears to deserving staff of Akrokerri College of Education.

– Addressing the non-migration and improper placement of a cross-section of members.

“Leadership wishes to appreciate our members for the unflinching support, and the display of gallantry and loyalty during these challenging times, and urge them to resume work with immediate effect. In doing so, leadership promises to go to all length to ensure that CETAG will get the best out of the on-going engagements and make sure that every single member is fully satisfied”, the statement added.
