Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has inaugurated a Technical Committee that will develop the legal and operational framework for the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).

This flagship initiative, envisioned by President John Dramani Mahama, aims to achieve currency stability through the structured purchasing and management of Ghana’s gold resources.

Addressing members of the committee at the Ministry of Finance, the Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson highlighted the importance of formalizing gold trading from the small-scale mining sector and promoting traceability to enhance the international acceptability of Ghana’s gold.

“Currently, the chaos in Ghana’s gold purchasing sector prevents the nation from fully benefiting from its gold resources,” he stated.

The Ghana Gold Board will streamline the sector by acting as the sole buyer of gold from legal small-scale mining operations through licensed aggregators and local traders.

The enabling legislation will also ensure strong monitoring and compliance measures to curtail black-market activities and gold smuggling.

The committee, composed of experts from various institutions, is tasked with drafting the Bill and developing the operational framework for the GoldBod. Members include Sammy Gyamfi Esq., Acting Managing Director of PMMC; Marriettta Agyeiwaa Brew, Legal Counsel to the President; and several other distinguished professionals.

“The establishment of the Ghana Gold Board is a critical tool for economic revitalization and currency stability,” Dr. Forson stated.

He urged the committee to work diligently to fast-track this noble objective and called on all industry players and stakeholders to support the initiative.
