Regional Minister-Designate to the Upper East Region, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has expressed his commitment to ending the ongoing conflict in Bawku.

The protracted Bawku conflict, which has claimed numerous lives, was described as a destructive clash that has caused significant social challenges in the region.

Mr. Atanga, during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee, acknowledged the complexity of the conflict, emphasizing that it cannot be resolved immediately but can be gradually extinguished through strategic measures. “The Bawku conflict is an old one, and it is not easy for one to sit at the table and say you can end it, but you must take certain steps, and those steps have been taken by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama,” he noted.

He pledged to work towards lasting peace in Bawku by following the roadmap outlined by the president who marked the conflict as one of national concern earlier this month and must be dealt with.

As part of his approach, he emphasized the importance of collaboration with regional security agencies and conflict resolution experts to find effective solutions, should he be approved as Regional Minister.

“I will not sit here to claim that I am an expert in conflict resolution and can do it alone. I will invite people who have the know-how in that direction,” he assured.
