Withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger from ECOWAS takes effect

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially announced the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc, effective January 29, 2025.

ECOWAS emphasized the need to maintain regional solidarity and minimize disruptions during this transition period.

According to a statement by ECOWAS, member states should continue to recognize national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo held by citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger until further notice.

It also maintains that, these countries have their rights to trade and economic activities in accordance with the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policy.

Also, citizens of the three nations will uphold its visa-free movement, residence, and establishment as per ECOWAS protocols.

ECOWAS officials from the three countries will receive full support and cooperation in their assignments for the Community.

These arrangements, according to ECOWAS will be in place until it Authority of Heads of State and Government finalizes the modalities of future engagement with the three nations.
