The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, is set to hold a crucial meeting today, January 30, with the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Petroleum Commission, Victoria Emeafa Hardcastle.

The meeting follows a tensed confrontation between Ms. Hardcastle and the Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, during a sitting of the Appointments Committee on Tuesday, January 28. The altercation, which has sparked widespread debate within political and legislative circles, reportedly occurred during the vetting of Dr. Omane Boamah as Defense Minister-Designate.

Sources indicate that an exchange of words between Hardcastle and Annoh-Dompreh escalated, prompting the MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri to express concern over what he perceives as an attack on his reputation as a legislator.

In the aftermath of the heated encounter, Annoh-Dompreh formally petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, urging him to take action by issuing directives ahead of the establishment of the Privileges Committee. This committee, which is responsible for investigating misconduct and breaches of parliamentary rules, has yet to be constituted.

Expressing deep dissatisfaction over the incident, the Minority Chief Whip called for immediate action, insisting that the matter needed urgent attention.

In response to the concerns raised, Speaker Bagbin acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and assured the House that he would engage with the Acting CEO of the Petroleum Commission before the formal establishment of the Privileges Committee.

The meeting, expected to be held behind closed doors, will provide an opportunity for the Speaker to hear Ms. Hardcastle’s perspective and assess the circumstances surrounding the incident.
