Emmanuel Xove Kporsu, Head of Public Relations, Rent Control Department, has disclosed that it is not right for any landlord to increase rent rates of their tenants without prior notice.

According to him, it is unacceptable and any landlord who does this can be sanctioned.

In an interview with Isaac Addae on the Happy Morning show he said, “Our law states that before any landlord increases their rent it should be because they want to renovate or modify the house to benefit the tenants if not it is unlawful to just increase the rent of tenants”.

He added that before the increment is done, the tenant should be given at least one month clear notice to prepare before the rent is increased.

“No law of ours indicates that a landlord should or can sack a tenant over refusal to pay increased rent. If any tenant faces this they should report to the closest rent control office and the landlord will be held accountable” he added.

He emphasized that such acts are against the law and there are sanctions for such landlords.

“Any tenant facing such a situation should apply for an assessment from the rent control office. It is mandatory to do so. When this is done we invite the landlord and the tenant over to our office and assess the situation” he noted.

Emmanuel urged tenants to voice their concerns and not be scared to voice out as the rent control department is guided by rules and regulations which should be followed.
