Religious leaders meet rebel groups in Goma amid rising tensions

A delegation of religious leaders in DRC met with rebel group leaders on Wednesday following more advancements made by dominating rebel group – M23 to claim the northern shore division of the African country.

Reports indicate that the meeting with the rebels was held on account of growing tensions and the emergence of a humanitarian crisis, leaving dozens of people injured and many others displaced.

Congolese authorities confirm at least 2,000 people dead in and around the city as a result of this unrest.

Renowned Catholic Priest and political figure, Donatien Nshole told credible news sources the rebel leaders reassured the delegation that they were not pursuing the division of the country, nor were they engaged in illicit exploitation of resources. He emphasized that the rebels had clarified their position on these issues, but he also urged for the reopening of key infrastructure such as the airport and port, vital for the region’s recovery.

The war’s impact continues to deepen as M23 rebels, join what is described as a broader struggle among more than 100 armed groups vying for control of Congo’s mineral-rich east – Goma, marking a significant escalation in their years-long conflict with government forces.
