Private legal practitioner, Maurice Ampaw, has stated that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would be the best candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2028 general elections.

In an exclusive interview with Happyghana.com reporter Nana Antwi Boasiako, Mr. Ampaw asserted that the contest for the 2028 NPP flagbearer position will likely be between Kennedy Agyapong and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. However, he believes Dr. Bawumia holds a significant edge in popularity over Kennedy Agyapong.

“When it comes to popularity, I don’t think Ken can match Bawumia. Bawumia is more popular than Ken,” he said.

He pointed out that, historically, no presidential candidate in Ghana has won the general elections on their first attempt. Given that Dr. Bawumia secured 42% of the vote in his first bid, Mr. Ampaw sees this as a strong indication of his potential.

He cited that if the NPP unites and rallies behind Dr. Bawumia in 2028, he would only need an additional 9% to secure the presidency. In contrast, he argued that Kennedy Agyapong’s potential performance in a general election remains uncertain.

“In Ghana’s history, no candidate has won a presidential election on their first attempt except perhaps on their second. So, I think since Bawumia secured 42% of the vote, he only needs about 9% more to win the presidency. If the NPP presents him as their candidate, promotes him effectively to Ghanaians, and unite behind him, he can win,” he said.

Maurice Ampaw, urged NPP executives to support and present Dr. Bawumia as their candidate in 2028, emphasizing that it is the party’s best path to victory.
