Civil society groups condemn arrest of forestry officer, demand action against illegal mining

A coalition of civil society organizations, environmental advocates, and concerned citizens has condemned the arrest of a Forestry Commission officer enforcing anti-illegal mining laws in the Atewa Forest.

In a statement issued on March 7, 2025, the group described the arrest as an abuse of power that undermines efforts to combat illegal mining.

They explained that the officer, a member of the Rapid Response Task Force, was manhandled and detained while attempting to stop illegal mining around the Obuoho area.

The coalition argued that this wrongful arrest sends a troubling message, suggesting that those working to protect Ghana’s forests and water bodies are being targeted, while illegal miners continue to operate unchecked.

They criticized the Kyebi Police for failing to address illegal mining in their jurisdiction but acting swiftly against a public officer carrying out his duty.

Calling for urgent leadership changes within the Eastern Region’s security apparatus, the group pointed to a lack of enforcement against illegal mining.

They specifically demanded the removal of the Eastern-South Police Commander DCOP George Boadi Bossman and Divisional Police Commander ACP Reynolds Sam, citing their inability to curb illegal mining activities in the region.

According to the coalition, multiple efforts by communities and civil society organizations to stop the pollution of the River Densu, River Birim, and other water bodies have failed, as illegal miners continue to destroy these resources under the watch of law enforcement.

They emphasized that without strong leadership, illegal mining will persist, threatening livelihoods, water security, and environmental sustainability in the region.

The coalition urged authorities to appoint dedicated officers who will enforce mining laws and restore order in the Akyem Abuakwa and Atewa areas.
