On Sunday evening, March 16, 2025, severe flooding struck Bimbilla following heavy rainfall, submerging homes and leaving residents in distress.

The flooding has been attributed to choked gutters caused by the indiscriminate dumping of refuse, which obstructed proper drainage.

Local assembly members have acknowledged the issue and are taking steps to address it.

Munkaila Muftaw, Assembly Member for Baatingli Electoral Area, explained, “The gutter is choked, so the water cannot flow when it rains citing that last week, the same thing occurred.

We contacted Zoomlion to provide cleaning essentials, but mobilizing people for a cleanup has been a challenge.”

In addition, Abdulai Abdul Wahid, Assembly Member for Bakpasugani Electoral Area, said they are going to mobilise people and clean the choked gutter to allow water to flow freely when it rains.

The flooding has taken a toll on residents, many of whom have lost their belongings. One resident, shared her plight, saying that their house is flooded, and all their belongings are submerged and as a result they have no place to sleep or eat after breaking their fast.

Another resident, admitted, “This happened because of irresponsible refuse dumping. Now, we are suffering, and our properties are gone. We urgently appeal for help.”

Both residents and authorities are calling for swift action to address the drainage problem and prevent future incidents.
