Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has strongly condemned the arrest of Kwabena Adu Boahene, former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, describing it as yet another case of political persecution under the current administration.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Afenyo-Markin accused the government of using state institutions to target political opponents.

He stated that Adu Boahene was arrested at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) on Thursday, March 20, 2025, upon arrival from London Heathrow at around 8:30 PM. According to reports, after going through immigration formalities at the CIP lounge, he was informed of an issue with his name that required resolution at the main immigration office in Terminal 3 Departures. There, he was told he was on the stop list of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and was wanted for questioning.

The Deputy Director of EOCO, Raymond Archer, was personally present with a team of officers who handcuffed Mr. Adu Boahene in the departures area, parading him through the Airport Departure Hall in the presence of onlookers. He was then pushed into a white Nissan Navara pickup truck, GN 8850 – 22 escorted by two other vehicles, and whisked away to an undisclosed location at about 9:47 PM.

Afenyo-Markin expressed deep concern over what he called a systematic clampdown on political opponents. He asserted that the government is abusing state institutions, particularly EOCO and the Ghana Immigration Service, to intimidate and silence individuals affiliated with the opposition.

He further called on civil society organizations, the international community, and human rights groups to take note of what he described as increasing human rights violations under the current administration.
