The Minority Caucus in parliament has raised concern over growing security threats in Ghana, including piracy, drug trafficking, and money laundering, under President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership.

At a press briefing on April 1, 2025, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee, stressed the need to protect Ghana’s reputation as a peaceful nation.

“Ghana has been ranked as the second most peaceful country in Africa, ahead of Australia and Canada. It is imperative that we maintain this status”.

He condemned the recent pirate attack on Ghanaian fishing vessel MENGXIN 1, which resulted in the kidnapping of three crew members, urging government to strengthen the Navy with Offshore Patrol Vessels.

“A previous attempt to secure these vessels was blocked by the NDC, leaving our waters vulnerable”.

Rev. Ntim Fordjour further highlighted a National Security raid in Sapeiman on February 9, where 12 containers filled with gold bars and cash were seized.

According to him, despite media reports, authorities have not disclosed details or taken legal action against those involved.

“We fear that these assets could be misappropriated if there is no transparency,”he warned, urging the government to provide updates on the investigation.

Expressing concern on some suspicious aircraft activity at the Kotoka International Airport, Rev Ntim Fordjour pointed out the arrival of about two suspicious flights, named AirMed Flight N823AM and Cavok Air Antonov An-12B from Gran Canaria, a hub for drug trafficking and money laundering.

He mentioned that, Intelligence suggests these flights carried suspected cocaine and cash.

“The government must disclose the contents of these flights to reassure Ghanaians of airspace security”.

He pledged on behalf of the Minority Caucus to hold government accountable on these critical security matters and called for immediate measures to prevent Ghana from becoming a hub for illegal activities.

“Transparency and collaboration are essential in addressing these threats and protecting Ghana’s global integrity”.
