The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has expressed concern over the rising wave of indiscipline in schools across the region, following a disturbing incident at the SDA Senior High School in Kumasi where a student was shot in the eye by a fellow student.

The Minister disclosed that the Regional Coordinating Council has already engaged school inspectors to thoroughly investigate the situation and identify actionable steps to address the growing concern.

One of the key areas under scrutiny is the safety protocols within schools and the rising trend of students bringing unapproved items, including weapons, to school.
Dr. Amoakohene further highlighted the challenges with school transportation, noting that several accidents involving school buses have resulted in injuries to students.

He noted that authorities have tasked the relevant stakeholders to ensure that these vehicles are roadworthy and that proper safety standards are upheld to prevent further harm.

As part of efforts to restore order and discipline, the Minister emphasized the need for psychological support and health care for students affected by traumatic incidents.

Dr. Amoakohene revealed that in the case of the SDA SHS shooting, his health-focused foundation has stepped in to provide immediate medical assistance and psychological support to the victim and her family.

The foundation, which includes a team of doctors and nurses, is also working closely with the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to ensure the best care is given to the injured student.

Beyond healthcare, the Minister noted the importance of continuous engagement with teachers and health professionals in schools to create a safer environment for students. Plans are underway to introduce additional preventive measures and reinforce discipline structures.

While investigations into the shooting incident are ongoing, Dr. Amoakohene assured the public that the law will take its full course and appropriate actions will be taken to deter similar occurrences in the future.
