His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has been formally informed of the passing of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the Mamponghene, one of the most powerful traditional rulers within the Ashanti Kingdom.

The notification was carried out in strict accordance with Asante custom and tradition, which places profound emphasis on protocol, especially in matters concerning chieftaincy.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, born on December 31, 1939, passed away at the age of 86, after serving as Mamponghene for 26 years. According to reports, he died last week Tuesday; however, in line with tradition, the official communication to the Asantehene was made only after the completion of the requisite rituals and consultations. In keeping with custom, the identity of the deceased Mamponghene was withheld from the public until all necessary traditional rites had been observed.

The role of Mamponghene holds exceptional significance in the Asante Kingdom. As the second-in-command to the Asantehene, the Mamponghene acts not only as a senior traditional authority but also serves as the Kumawuhene, the guardian of the Golden Stool in the absence of the Asantehene. His passing represents a moment of deep reflection and transition within the traditional governance of the Ashanti Region.

The Mampong Traditional Area, one of the most influential divisions within the Kingdom, will now enter a period of mourning.

Residents are expected to wear black and red attire in the coming days as a mark of respect. Traditional festivities, including drumming and dancing, will be suspended and replaced with solemn dirges, as preparations for the final funeral rites begin.

The death of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II marks the end of a significant era, and many await further announcements from Manhyia Palace regarding funeral arrangements and the traditional processes leading to the enstoolment of a successor.
