The Generational Rights Protection Society has announced a suspension of its planned protest today April 29, 2025.

Speaking with the media after a closed door meeting with the Accra Police Command, the group, led by co-convener Kwame Appiah-Kubi, agreed to postpone the demonstration, an appeal made not just by law enforcement but also by Deputy Attorney-General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai on behalf of the government.

““We thank the police very much for collaborating with us throughout the protest. Precisely today, Tuesday, April 29, we were supposed to converge where we ended the demonstration and continue day two, but just this morning (Tuesday) , there was a call that came through the Deputy Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, together with the police command at the Accra region, the message is very simple, ‘they pleaded with us for the day two to be postponed for them to be able to adequately prepare”.

Though the march did not resume as planned, Appiah-Kubi confidently told the press that the movement’s impact had already been felt.

“We believe that, whether in a day or two, the purpose has been achieved. “We’re number one on Twitter [X], even as we speak.”

The protest, aimed at tackling the rampant devastation caused by illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, had already sparked waves across social media and traditional media platforms, forcing leaders to take notice.

The Generational Rights Protection Society’s advocacy has opened a crucial dialogue between activists and government authorities.
