Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has officially withdrawn from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing “Thank You” tour, citing security concerns for his supporters.
His decision comes in the wake of a violent incident that resulted in the stabbing of a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), affiliated with Unity Hall on Tuesday, April 29.
The student, a member of the Unity Hall Jama group, had been contracted by Agyapong’s team to perform at an event held at the Pentecost Church in Bantama, Kumasi.
According to Agyapong’s team, a wealthy associate of the former MP who attended the event gave money to the Jama group. However, a group of heavily built, armed men allegedly linked to the NPP reportedly stormed the venue and seized the money.
A confrontation ensued between the Jama group and the assailants, during which gunshots were fired. In the ensuing chaos, one member of the Jama group was stabbed.
The victim was immediately taken to the emergency unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and is currently receiving treatment.
Mr. Agyapong and his team have since filed an official complaint with the Kumasi Central Police Command.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, Mr. Agyapong confirmed his decision to pull out of the tour and pledged to seek justice for the injured victim.
