Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has formally declared his intention to contest the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position, citing increasing exclusion and hostility within the party as his motivation.

According to him, his decision comes in response to recent developments that suggest a deliberate attempt to sideline him and his supporters.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, April 30, he made it clear that every member of the party should prepare for his active participation in the upcoming internal race, stressing that he is fully committed and will not back down.

Mr. Agyapong officially withdrew from the NPP’s ongoing “Thank You” tour, citing security concerns for his supporters.

His decision came after a violent incident on Tuesday, April 29, in which a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), affiliated with Unity Hall, was stabbed.

Mr. Agyapong pointed to incidents from Berekum to Kumasi as signs that his presence in the party is being undermined.

He noted that the atmosphere within the NPP no longer reflects unity but is increasingly marked by division and internal sabotage.

He also expressed disappointment over the tone of discussions on social media, where he says insults and threats have replaced constructive engagement.

Though he has chosen not to respond publicly to the attacks, he believes the trend is a calculated move to push him out of the party’s leadership equation.

As a result, Mr. Agyapong announced that he and his supporters will no longer participate in ongoing unity efforts.

Instead, they will focus on preparing a strong challenge in the party’s next internal elections.

Reaffirming his long-standing loyalty to the NPP since the 1980s, he insisted that no one has the authority to tell him to step aside.

He noted that he has earned his place in the race and remains resolute in his ambition to lead the party.
