A coalition led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally petitioned the Judiciary, urging a reversal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s suspension.

The petition, called on judicial authorities to intervene and uphold fairness within Ghana’s legal system.

During the presentation, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin passionately appealed to Judicial Service staff, encouraging them to stand in solidarity with the coalition in defense of judicial independence.

He further cautioned key judiciary officials, including Acting Chief Justice and Acting Judicial Service Secretary, against complacency, warning that a precedent of politically motivated suspensions could threaten the integrity of Ghana’s judicial system.

“For the Judiciary to rise, don’t be comfortable because it is Torkornoo. Don’t be comfortable because the attack is benefiting you. Rather, pray that a fair system is created for all to benefit”.

In response, Acting Judicial Service Secretary Dr. Cyracus Badinye Bapuuroh expressed appreciation for the petition and assured the delegation that it would be forwarded to the relevant authorities for consideration.

The suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo followed the establishment of a prima facie case based on three separate petitions seeking her removal.

This development has ignited widespread debate, with legal experts, political commentators, and the Ghana Bar Association questioning its constitutional validity.
