Rwanda: Foreign Minister shares plans to receive migrants deported from US

Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe, has noted that deliberations with the United States to send deported migrants to Rwanda are underway.

US President Donald Trump’s administration made issues of immigration and capturing of illegal migrants one of the first orders in February following his swearing in as President of the United States.

The Foreign Minister speaking to the press on late Sunday asserted that Rwanda is capable, given the success of the agreement signed with Britain in 2022 to take in thousands of asylum seekers from the United Kingdom before the deal was scrapped last year by then newly-elected Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

He indicated in an interview with the state broadcaster, Rwanda TV that discussions which are believed to asses Kigali’s capacity and competence in handling these migrants are ongoing.

“We are in discussions with the United States. It has not yet reached a stage where we can say exactly how things will proceed, but the talks are ongoing… still in the early stages.”

Rwanda has in recent years positioned itself as a destination country for migrants that Western countries would like to remove, despite concerns by rights groups that Kigali does not respect some of the most fundamental human rights.
