Ghana’s football community is in mourning following the passing of Wilberforce Mfum, a key member of the legendary 1963 Black Stars squad that brought home Ghana’s first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy.

His death leaves only three surviving members of that historic team—Dodoo Ankrah, Kofi Pare, and Anum Okai—after Leonard Acquah’s passing last year.

In one of his last public appearances at Happy FM’s ‘Celebrating Our Heroes’ event in 2023, Mfum shared a powerful message about commitment and national pride.

“Players who are not ready to kill themselves for the Nation should not be selected,” he declared, echoing the unwavering passion that defined his generation.

His longtime teammate, Dodoo Ankrah, who sat beside him during the tribute, reinforced this sentiment, urging current players to wear the Black Stars jersey with the same pride and sacrifice as the pioneers.

The news of Mfum’s passing has stirred deep emotions across Ghana. Kofi Pare, his fellow 1963 champion, broke down in tears during an interview on Happy Sports, reflecting on the gradual loss of Ghana’s football legends.

“I received a call informing me on Mum’s death, it was a heavy pill o swallow and i must admit i couldn’t believe it” Pare said, his voice trembling with sorrow.

Wilberforce Mfum’s name will forever be etched in Ghana’s football history, not just for the 1963 triumph, but for his enduring belief in the values that made the Black Stars great. As tributes pour in, his words and deeds remain a guiding light for the future of Ghanaian football.

Happy FM, through its ‘Celebrating Our Heroes’ initiative, continues to honor these icons, ensuring their sacrifices and triumphs inspire generations to come.

Rest in Peace, Wilberforce Mfum – A True Black Stars Legend.
