The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has announced a national call to action encouraging the formation of farmer cooperatives across the country under its flagship Feed Ghana Programme.

The initiative, unveiled by the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, is intended to empower smallholder farmers, boost agricultural productivity, and drive Ghana closer to achieving food self-sufficiency and economic resilience.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Ministry’s conference room in Accra on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Eric Opoku highlighted the central role farmer cooperatives will play in the government’s development agenda, including advancing the 24-Hour Economy proposed by President John Dramani Mahama.

He described the cooperative model as a transformative tool that enables farmers, particularly small-scale and vulnerable groups, to harness collective strength for better access to resources, enhanced bargaining power, and improved production efficiency. According to the Minister, forming cooperatives is not merely an administrative formality but a strategic decision aimed at re-engineering Ghana’s agricultural sector.

He emphasized that through the Feed Ghana Programme, organized farmer groups will be prioritized in accessing a comprehensive package of services and support. These include the use of Farmer Service Centres (FSCc) that will provide mechanization services, agricultural inputs, extension support, and climate-smart technologies.

Financial institutions, in partnership with MoFA, will offer cooperatives access to tailored financial services such as savings, insurance schemes, and mobile money platforms. Additionally, cooperatives will be eligible for credit and investment opportunities, including access to improved livestock breeds like Kuroiler chickens, feed subsidies, and specialized training.

Mr. Opoku emphasized that this cooperative-driven approach represents a major milestone in an effort to organize Ghana’s farming population and build a strong, integrated agricultural value chain. He called on all farmers to embrace the initiative and join cooperatives as a means to secure their livelihoods, contribute to national food security, and participate fully in the country’s economic transformation.
