Authorities at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) made a significant drug bust on Sunday, May 18, 2025, seizing 92 slabs of suspected cannabis weighing 53.6 kilograms.

The operation, led by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), resulted in the arrest of a British national attempting to smuggle the illicit substance into Ghana.

The suspect arrived in Accra aboard Emirates flight EK 787, traveling from Thailand via Dubai.

NACOC operatives, stationed at the airport, uncovered two suitcases packed with the drug during a routine inspection.

Further investigations led to the arrest of two alleged accomplices a Customs Officer and an airport staff member working at the Commercially Important Person (CIP) section.

According to NACOC Deputy Director Alexander Twum Barimah, the suspects are now in custody, assisting with inquiries into the trafficking attempt.

Barimah issued a stern warning to travellers engaging in drug smuggling, emphasizing that authorities remain vigilant in protecting Ghana’s borders.

He also cautioned security personnel against colluding with traffickers, stating that any involvement would lead to strict legal consequences.

The case underscores ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking at Ghana’s entry points, ensuring that the country remains secure from the illegal drug trade.
