AMA, Korle Klottey Assembly begin joint decongestion operation

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, has commenced a major decongestion exercise today, Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

The operation is targeting key areas around the AMA Head Office, including Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square to Adabraka.

Speaking to the media, AMA Public Relations Officer Gilbert Ankrah stated that the exercise will be intensified along major routes, particularly from Wato Junction through King Tackie Tawiah School to Cow Lane.

Ahead of the operation, AMA Chief Executive Michael Kpakpo Allotey engaged street hawkers in the Central Business District (CBD), appealing for their cooperation.

The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to restore order and improve sanitation across Accra.

However, some traders and hawkers in the Central Business District have appealed to the AMA and the government to provide alternative spaces for them to sell their goods.

They expressed concern that being removed from their current locations without any alternatives will negatively impact their livelihoods.

“This is our only means of survival, now that we’ve been asked to leave, we have nowhere to go and no way to make a living. We’re pleading with the government to help us,” one hawker lamented.
