The Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has urged the NDC government to apply the principle of fairness and treat others the way they would want to be treated.

Speaking to the media during a protest by the Minority at the forecourt of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), on Thursday, May 29, 2025, Afenyo-Markin criticized the handling of the case involving Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi.

He noted that Wontumi willingly responded to a police invitation and reported to the CID, only to be arrested in what he described as a “Rambo-style” operation, followed by the imposition of a GHC 50 million bail condition.

He appealed to EOCO to reconsider the terms of the bail, citing concerns about Wontumi’s health and affirming that he poses no flight risk and is willing to comply with legal procedures.

“In a Rambo-style he was arrested, you interrogate him and he makes himself available. Your next thing is that go and bring property worth 50 million Ghana cedis, what kind of country are we in? Have they looked at the constitution?, they should vary the bail term, the man is unwell, he is in their custody and they know,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin further warned the NDC that political power is not permanent, cautioning them to reflect on their actions. He questioned the justification for Wontumi’s treatment and urged a more humane and democratic approach.

“Wontumi will not run anywhere and I’m telling my friends in the NDC, four years will soon come and if they think what they are doing is right they should watch it. Treat others the way you expect them to do unto you, treat others the way you want them to treat you, so if you keep Wontumi, are you using bail to punish him,” he added.

He called on government to use its time in office to govern responsibly and not to use state power as a tool to suppress political opponents.
